Who This CJ Hooper Record Is For

CJ Hooper is based in Washington state and writes with deep Texas roots. That is the tension the album runs on. This is old-school country at heart, played by a full band with the rock edges left on.

The opener sets the terms. Burn It Down arrives with thick arrangements, what Americana Highways described as barbed-wire guitar pops and locomotive beats. That is not a polite country record. It is a loud one.

From there the album moves through Damaged Plan, Hard Times and Rain Song before Lookie Over Yonder, which the same review singled out for its ZZ Top guitar spray. The Collector and Yonderer close it out. No track passes four minutes.

The listener for this record wants country singing over a band that can actually play, rather than country as a production style. If Buck Owens and Merle Haggard are reference points you use approvingly, the timbre here will land. Americana Highways reached for both names, and the comparison holds in the vocal delivery more than in the arrangements.

What The Full Band Framing On A CJ Hooper Record Means

The short runtime matters too. Twenty three minutes is an unusual length in 2026, when albums routinely stretch past an hour to game streaming numbers. Seven tracks and out is a choice, and it makes the record easy to return to.

The full band framing is worth taking literally as well. Plenty of records filed under singer-songwriter are one person and an acoustic guitar with session players added afterwards. This is not that. The arrangements are built around a group playing together. The weight in the low end and the interplay between guitar and rhythm section are the reason the country material does not thin out.

It is also his second record rather than a debut, which changes what it has to do. A first album introduces a voice. A second one has to prove the voice has range. Over Yonder answers that by moving between the hard opener and quieter material without the seams showing.

Why CJ Hooper’s Over Yonder Keeps Finding Listeners

Over Yonder did not arrive unnoticed. Saving Country Music included it in its round-up of the year’s most anticipated country albums, which is a meaningful list to appear on for an independent artist. Americana Highways reviewed it on release. The Alternate Root covered it as well.

That is respectable coverage for a self-released second record. It is also spread across outlets that take the genre seriously, rather than general music blogs picking up whatever lands in the inbox.

Hooper’s own account of the album is straightforward. “‘Over Yonder’ was a deeply personal project, and I’m incredibly proud of how its blend of country, rock, and singer-songwriter elements came together with the full band,” he said. “It’s fantastic to see it continue to find new listeners and connect with them in a meaningful way, proving that good music truly has a lasting impact.”

There is a simpler explanation for the staying power. The record has kept moving because it is short, well played and unfashionable in a useful way. There is no attempt here to chase the current country-pop production template, and six months on that looks like the right call rather than a limitation.

The obvious question with a second album is what the third one does. Over Yonder establishes a lane: full band country rock, Texas phrasing, songs that finish when they are done. It does not resolve whether Hooper wants to push further toward rock or settle deeper into traditional country, and both directions are audible here.
